Like Grains of Sand

I've been working on a 2D platformer-type game for a bit now. It's a school project, but it's also a concept I've had in the back of my head for a while. This is a thing I drew today for that thing I mentioned a few sentences ago. Please view it with your eyes.

Grains of sand as in hour glass which keeps time and grains of sand as in grainy pixels, each a tiny piece of a gigantic whole. It's a clever title I swear.

Five shades of gray and some little color accents that I may or may not keep. I've always had a fascination for clock towers, and I'm happy to report that nothing has changed.

A Thousand Miles Apart

Shannon and I have been in a long-term relationship for almost two years now - I live in Kansas, she lives in Utah. We meet every few months, but the distance is still hard to deal with. Video games have had a huge part in our relationship, allowing us to play together even when we can't be together. This is what I did for Valentine's Day this year.

What's this?
That's odd. I could have sworn it was blue a moment ago.
Now it's two kinds of blue! What is this world becoming?
So much blue...

The link goes to a download page for a game I spent the past few sleepless nights making. It features her in Utah and me in Kansas, trying to make it to Colorado (the state between us).

You can download it and give it a try here: http://goo.gl/SEu1Pd

I've included the game's closing cinematic after the jump break for anyone who wants to see the final message without playing the game. For everyone else, spoiler warning and Happy Valentine's Day!

The Adventure Begins!

Let's a-go!

Here's some stuff for a thing I'm doing!

I was sketching out some pixel sprites, and I liked them so much that I figured I might as well make a game out of them. What kind of game is still sort of up in the air, but I'm leaning towards puzzle-platformer.

The last time I coded a game from scratch was in middle school, so I'll be interested to see if I can still do things. Relearning all this stuff is going to be time-consuming work, and obviously my school work takes precedence, so I have no idea when I'll have this completed!

Stay tuned!

Hey!

I enjoy doodling. It has a lot of practical applications, from organizing the thought process to developing an early concept to relieving boredom.

Someone - I have no idea who - drew all these lovely little pencil sketches on the table liner at a nearby desk.

All these wonderful expressions and Catbug's just doin' his usual thing, huggin' some toast.

So, being a connoisseur of fine doodles and the owner of several pens and markers, I took it upon myself to ink and color one of the more interesting ones.

"One of these days, Navi. There's gotta be a bottle around here somewhere..."

Again, I didn't draw this, and I have no idea who did, but I certainly enjoyed coloring it in, and I think the finished sketch has a lovely, cartoonish quality to it, and it was fun to translate certain elements into a more color-friendly environment.

Level Caps is Go!

Level Caps, a collaboration between myself an Shannon of "Shan in" fame, is now operational! It's been a long time in the making, from logo work to hat designs to yarn palette selections, but we've done it!

You can peruse our entire selection here, but just as a sample, here are a few of the hats we've already sold!

Every Expression of Endless Envy

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I made a poster in typography! We were given one hour to pick a typeface, come up with a concept, and use freehand marker skills to turn in into a finished poster that displayed five qualities of type anatomy. Naturally my first instinct was to make Pac-man screaming/eating Helvetica Es in a spiral formation.

Naturally.

The Cat's Meow

Taking a victory nap.

Excellent news, folks! One of my designs has won the Jinx Unsung Heroes Contest in no small part due to everyone who supported this design by voting, who I'd like to thank profusely. Honestly I was under the impression that this was one of my weakest designs. It was the last one I put together, and I actually had a full redesign planned for it. I don't have the file on me, but I'll have this post edited later on to show what I had in mind.

The fact that it was selected as one of the top ten grand prize winners is still difficult for me to believe, in part because of all the other incredible designs that won. But I'm not about to complain about the outcome, so hooray!

Singing the Songs of the Unsung

...this is a cow......and this is a squid who has tried her entire adolescent life to gain the approval and affection of a father figure who has never really made himself available to her emotionally. Subconsciously she gave up on trying to please her father years ago, and now in her increasingly self-destructive search for attention she has turned to amateur pole dancing on odd-shaped poles. This is a cat...

They're all up for voting! Not totally sure how that happened, but I'm not complaining. Click each of the icons above to be taken to the voting page for that design. Vote well, vote often!

Safe and Sound

Hiss and Purr

I've been busy with class, but so far it seems like there are a lot of interesting things going on in these classes. I'm already working on some neat papercraft stuff in Design 3D that I'll probably have ready to post sometime today, but for now let's focus on the kitty drawings.

Ocelots in Minecraft scare creepers away, and this seemed like a nice, soft approach to this vicious game of avoidance and explosions. Also, I finally got my designs on the proper submission template and submitted them. There's a lot of weird stuff going on with Jinx's qualification process right now (for my three designs I've received three letters of rejection and two letters of acceptance) so I'll let you know when voting officially starts and I know exactly what's going on.

Here are my other two entries in proper t-shirt form. Kinda bums me out that they had such a limited selection of colors, but they all stand on their own.

Creature of the Deep

The cold steely eyes of a killer.

Avast! Another entry to the Jinx Unsung Heroes of Minecraft contest! This one's a squid, and I love it for so many reasons. It has a pixel aesthetic that compliments the game, it turns the unobtrusive li'l squid into a ferocious beast, and the ship itself is just all sorts of cool.

Working on the ocelot now, and I might have a design before the end of today. I don't think I'll have time or creativity enough to do all ten of the featured mobs, but I don't see any reason not to try.

Super Happy Funtime Fungus Cow Go!

モー モー

J!NX is putting on another design contest, The Unsung Heroes of Minecraft. They're asking for t-shirts designed around ghasts, squids, wolves, enderdragons, ocelots, blaze, sheep, iron golems, or mooshrooms, which all seem like pretty random characters to group together, but whatever.

The deadline's June 3rd, and I've spent the last few days working on a few submissions. This is the first one I've completed, a li'l Japanese mooshroom. The text under him just says "Mushroom Cow."

I made the distressed t-shirt overlay myself and I'm really proud of how it turned out. Makes it feel like an old thrift-store purchase. Adds character. Yeah.

I've got a squid design in the works, so I'll probably post that one tomorrow.

Expy

Glowy!
A New PVP Game about Improving Yourself
Downloads

This random pig wants to play Expy. Don't you wanna be as cool as a random pig? Peer pressure!

Expy is a game that allows you to grow as an individual through learning new things, practicing your skills, and senselessly killing your opponents.

The concept is simple and builds upon a core mechanic of Minecraft: that of gaining experience. For every five levels of experience you gain, you'll unlock new abilities, such as increased mining speed or strength. The first player to make it to level 50 wins!

Expy is a stand-alone set of command blocks and piston gadgets neatly packed into a small box that can be imported to and played on your favorite custom maps or in a randomly generated world. Expy puts a dynamic new spin on the way Minecraft is played, creating a fun competitive experience that you can enjoy with your friends. Or, if you prefer a solo challenge, see where your journey of self improvement takes you.

Expy is available now for download, as a schematic file ready to be placed in your favorite world or pre-placed in three randomly-generated environments. Try it today!

Give it Time

What is a day to a sunless void?

A work in progress for a Minecraft game I'm working on. It's similar to Capture the Sword in that it's a two-team invasion game, but it's got a lot of fundamental differences in play style. I'll be making a post about the official rules and all that as soon as I get the game finished, which shouldn't be long now.

This clock tower took me a crazy amount of time to make and is one of my favorite builds in Minecraft currently, so I'm just going to gush about it for a bit here:

The tower is 125 meters tall, just a bit shorter than the Great Pyramid of Giza. It has ten floors, including a lobby, a gallery, a balcony, a ballroom, a storage deck, a machine room, a wiring bay, and an observation deck. A lot of the inspiration for the design interior and exterior was taken from Gothic architecture.

The clock is fully functional. To speak a bit more to the technical side of Minecraft, the timing mechanism is powered by an item despawn loop emitting pulses into a ring of hoppers that transports a small amount of sand around in a circle, powering the various comparators and sending a signal up into a series of interconnected redstone wires that either activate or deactivate a lamp, depending on the position in the cycle.

Lights progress once every five minutes and complete a cycle once every hour. There's a clock face on all four sides, which required a lot of wire to hook up to one timing mechanism. Just an unholy amount of wire. (Left: timing mechanism. Right: an unholy amount of wire)

Capture the Sword 3: Merger Mayhem

It's here! The third installment of the Capture the Sword series has arrived! I took a radically different direction with the level design for this one, in that I made it the least radical thing imaginable: an office building.

Minecraft is sort of geared towards a medieval build style. Cobblestone, stone bricks, swords, bows, armor, magic, potions. Building a modern office building was a bit of a challenge, but it was really fun to do, and it turned out pretty well. We've got everything from cars to copiers to desks to potted plants. Here are some pictures, and here's the download link (Mediafire).

Capture the Sword 2: Cavern Clash

Remember Capture the Sword? It's a Minecraft PVP game that I created a while back. Think capture the flag, but with swords. I made a new map for it, and it can be downloaded below. And below that there's some nice pictures of what it looks like.

I am good at descriptions of things and stuff.

Capture the Sword

This is a little outside of my focus in graphic design, but it's been engaging quite a bit of my time as of late and I'm proud of how it turned out, so I figued I'd share it here. It took a bit of world-building and game design but I made a new style of player vs. player game in Minecraft.

Introducing Capture the Sword! Think capture the flag, but with swords.

Rules and How to Play
& Regulations
You know, if you can help it. If it's not too out of your way.
One side of the battlefield. The sides are mirror images of each other, with equal ground, resources, weapons.

CASTLE IN THE SKYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

The gate that marks your entry into hostile territory.

FLOATY GATE ALSO TECHNICALLY IN THE SKYYYYYY!

All the resources needed to protect your sword from invaders are available, but some are more difficult to find than others.

What a lovely, quaint, flammable village we've got here...

Watch your step.

Oh so the mine needs support but the entrance to our war-engaged city doesn't?

The castle will be your base of operations. Massive and winding, you'll have to navigate both safely in one life if you want to win.

Block Eagle! So Block Majestic!

All sorts of fancy.

The bedrock altar holds the sword of the each castle, and will be the primary target of attack. Guard it with your life or try to fight your way to the enemy's altar.

The floor looks like it could use a few BLOCK EAGLES!

Classy, but is it BLOCK CLASSY? BLOCK CLASSY LIKE A BLOCK EAGLE!?

The team spawn point is located just above the altar, so if you plan to hack and slash your way in, be prepared to deal with the continuous onslaught of vengeful victims.

Oh, a solid-color flag. With no block eagle on it. So we're just done with block eagles, huh?

And of course, there are secrets to be found. Treasures to be unearthed.

Like this one. Right here. This secret I'm pointing out to everyone.

So hidden, you can only access it by going to the entrance.

And that's Capture the Sword! Download it and try it out!
